Methodology v1.0.0
How the statistical ranking works
A deterministic, documented model: identical data and settings always produce identical rankings. The weights below are editorial starting assumptions, not scientifically established values — they are published so they can be questioned.
The formula
Overall = 0.30 × Peak performance + 0.25 × Career performance + 0.20 × Individual accolades + 0.15 × Team accomplishments + 0.10 × Longevity
Peak performance
30%The strongest documented period: the best rolling multi-year window of contemporary individual awards (era-adjusted for award availability) plus team titles at a reduced factor. Season-level performance data does not exist consistently across eras, so v1 measures peak through documented recognition.
Career performance
25%Position-aware production and selection. Forwards and midfielders are scored on league goals per match and international goals per cap against position-specific anchors (minimum sample sizes apply). All positions are scored on international caps per year of international career. Goal metrics are not applied to defenders or goalkeepers.
Individual accolades
20%Weighted individual awards. Contemporary award points are divided by the share of modern award opportunity that existed for the player (by year, nationality, club and position) — floored to limit extrapolation — and era-neutral retrospective honors are added.
Team accomplishments
15%Major titles weighted by competitive significance, with historically equivalent competitions grouped so the same achievement is never counted twice (e.g. European Cup ≡ Champions League; First Division ≡ Premier League).
Longevity
10%Senior career length, the number of documented elite seasons (a major award or a significant title), and international career length. Appearance totals are deliberately excluded so volume alone does not raise the score.
Missing evidence and eligibility
- Each category reports full, limited or unavailable evidence. An unavailable category contributes nothing and is shown as unavailable.
- A calculated rank requires evidence in all 5 categories. Players with at least 3 are shown as rank pending with a clearly labelled provisional estimate; they are never interleaved with ranked players.
- Rates need minimum samples: 100 league matches or 20 caps.
- Evidence coverage (how many categories have full evidence and what share of inputs are directly sourced) is reported separately from the score. It is a completeness indicator, not a calibrated probability.
- The list is not padded to 100: only players meeting the evidence rules are ranked.

Position adjustment on contemporary award points: goalkeeper ×1.15, defender ×1.15, midfielder ×1, forward ×1 — an editorial assumption that major awards have historically favoured attacking players.
Era and position adjustments
Award availability
Later award systems should not automatically disadvantage earlier generations. For each year of a career the model computes which awards were open to that player, relative to a modern player in the same position, nationality and club confederation:
- ONZE_DOR: 1976+ (at UEFA clubs)
- FIFPRO_WORLD_XI: 2005+
- UEFA_TEAM_OF_YEAR: 2001+ (at UEFA clubs)
- UEFA_PLAYER_OF_YEAR: 1998+ (at UEFA clubs)
- EUROPEAN_GOLDEN_SHOE: 1968+ (at UEFA clubs)
- GLOBAL_PLAYER_OF_YEAR: 1956–1990 (UEFA nationals); 1991+
- WORLD_CUP_GOLDEN_BALL: 1982+
- GLOBAL_GOALKEEPER_OF_YEAR: 1987+ (goalkeepers)
- SOUTH_AMERICAN_PLAYER_OF_YEAR: 1971–1985 (CONMEBOL nationals); 1986+ (at CONMEBOL clubs)
Scaling is floored at 0.5 (at most ×2.0), so absent awards are never fully imputed.
Position rules
| Position | Production | Selection |
|---|---|---|
| goalkeeper | 0 | 1 |
| defender | 0 | 1 |
| midfielder | 0.35 | 0.65 |
| forward | 0.65 | 0.35 |
Scoring environment
Decade factors for goals per match and caps per year are part of the model but are set to a neutral 1.0 in v1.0.0: we have not yet sourced league-wide scoring averages and fixture densities to calibrate them. This is a known limitation (see below).
Normalisation uses fixed, published anchor points rather than the current player pool, so adding or removing players never silently re-scores everyone else.
Determinism, ties and snapshots
- Ties are broken by overall score, then peak, accolades, team, career and longevity (each descending), then name and slug alphabetically.
- Every recalculation runs twice and compares an input hash; a non-deterministic result blocks publication.
- Published snapshots are immutable — enforced by the database itself. Data or methodology changes produce a new version with recorded rank changes.
- The personal ranking is a separate record and is never read or modified by recalculation.
Data definitions and quality
- Official appearance and goal: a senior competitive match for a first-team club or a full international (cap). Youth, reserve, Olympic, friendly and unofficial matches are excluded from totals.
- Club figures from Wikidata follow the Wikipedia infobox convention — domestic league matches only — and are labelled as such. Historic totals differ between sources depending on friendlies and unofficial matches; when sources disagree on the same spell, the conservative claim is used and the record is flagged.
- Team titles are either stated directly, derived from tournament participation plus the edition winner, or (provisionally) inferred from a club stint covering a title-winning season.
All inputs have been checked by an editor against an authoritative source.
Inputs come from referenced community sources (Wikidata) and/or are derived; not all have been independently checked.
Sources disagree on at least one input; the conservative value is used until resolved.
The required data is not available.
Evidence is insufficient for a calculated rank; any score shown is a provisional estimate.
Known limitations
- Peak is measured through recognition, not on-pitch performance data, which double-counts some honors with the accolade and team categories.
- Defenders and goalkeepers are assessed on selection rate and honors only; no cross-era defensive metric exists in the current sources.
- Era factors for scoring environment and international fixture density are neutral (uncalibrated), which may understate players from lower-scoring eras and favour players from eras with more internationals.
- Source coverage is uneven: some players have undated or unrecorded awards on Wikidata, and competitions outside the catalog (domestic cups, state championships) are not counted.
- Team titles inferred from stint dates may credit a player for a season in which they barely played.
- Team success is an imperfect proxy for individual quality; its weight is deliberately modest.
